On Sunday I got to print the blocks pictured above at Big Wheel Press in Northampton, MA. Ali Osborn did the printing, but I would try and help him by holding the finished prints and I made a lousy attempt at mixing my ink colors. The print will be a part of a print portfolio that I will share more about at a later date. The other artists involved are....

I am leaving next week for North Carolina for the first two weeks of March to do some work at Elsewhere Artist Collaborative in Greensboro. I am collaborating with Mary Rothlisberger and J.W. Gamble we have been commissioned to make the artist-in-residence residences more hospitable. I am excited to go back to Elsewhere it has been almost four years.

Maybe when I am there or when I come home I will tell you why I love Elsewhere and think that is an important institution in the current American climate.

There has been no snow here and it has been so warm (in the 50's today). Is it going to be a very dry spring (drought)? How thick are the ticks and mosquitoes going to be this year? Things are sprouting and syrup is flowing. It makes me a bit uncomfortable (maybe I shouldn't be?). I have been told the air currents are flowing further north this year keeping the cold air over Canada, but for some reason it isn't making me feel any better.

I am a part of a book curated by Alex Moore and Emily Smith called Articulate. I received my copy Monday and have been enjoying going through it.

From Alex Moore’s introduction to the book:

“With its rigid steel back, and conveniently included washcloth, this art book would fit nicely between the canned food and the matches in a home emergency kit. Preparedness is important when living in the contemporary landscape: as expressed by one artist, this is “a very safe city, except for the part that’s on fire.” The unacknowledged fire may be the repressed sexuality of men kept in the closet by society’s continuing homophobia, the ecological damage we continue to repackage for consumption, or the intrusive reality of protesters being killed in a far away land. Or it could be the literal truth that, fairly often, Los Angeles is on fire. Whatever the danger is, many of the works in this collection articulate a struggle to make a home in its presence."

Articulate is the second collaborative book project curated by Alex and Emily.

On Monday when I got home from work I found our shoes put back in their usual spot but arranged so neatly I felt strange but also delighted. The electricians in the morning had said they would try to put things back the way they were. But they are so much more careful than we are.

They are removing the knob and tube wiring from the house.

I have been a bit clumsy this week.

On Sunday I went on a trip to the Museum of Natural History in Providence, RI. The main impetus of the trip was to see the exhibition Curiouser that Victore Signore (a friend and local artist) has work in. The piece he has in the show is a reiteration of the amazing untitled (Dream Wall) that he had done in the 2009 show Call and Response.

We met M.
He was wonderful with very square teeth.
He has a lot of information and a lot of care.
He has a license to pick up and freeze dry roadkill.
He took our picture with a bear.

The sewing machine pictured above's owner passed away last year. I never met her. I am told she sewed all her own clothing and curtains. Her son was in charge of going through her belongings. I have received this beautiful machine. I am trying to figure out how to run it as a treadle without electricity.

Maybe you know about SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) already because it has been all over the news. There are so many other places on the internet right now to read about the language involved in the bills (reddit is comprehensive).

I just want to make a little comment:
I have been thinking about how exciting all of the clashing and questioning of the bills' language has been. The new space that the Internet has created in our culture is redefining freedom and expression and consumption. It has been good for me to think about how I use the internet, what I want from it, and what kind of responsibilities I have to it and to others while using it. I find it also interesting how there seems to be a clashing of old power structures with newer ones and what does that mean going forward. Who has what skills and information and how the internet changes the playing field. The bills have been put on hold for modification it will be interesting to see how the language changes when they come back around.
Who is going to have say in the changes?
Will lawmakers go to internet training seminars in the meantime?

On Friday morning I found this wing, it fell out of one of the bags of yarn I was packing. I am amazed that it stayed in one piece. We are rough on the yarn. It is piled into bags and stacked into carts, and then un-bagged, counted, and then repackaged up for shipping. Later in the day I found a bee in a bag of yarn and the bee was in one piece.

On Saturday night Alicia Renadette opened up the unoccupied apartment downstairs from hers for people to come and view a multi-room installation she has been working on for the past couple of months. In some ways this apartment was the perfect place for her work to present itself at this time.

I have seen Alicia’s work in galleries before and have always been excited and pulled in by the pieces. Her current work I see as bodies of decay and/or growth trying hard to present themselves as beautiful and restrained beings to the viewer. But at some point it becomes apparent that since they are beings in a state of flux they are leaking innards in front of everyone and can’t control it (maybe don’t even want to control it). In a gallery this makes them a little pathetic and a little bit frightening.

These beings that feel exposed in the gallery were decidedly in charge of the apartment and leaked as they liked. The pieces found their spots in the apartment and grew into the architecture. They spread out in their different rooms and attended to their own processes in front of company unabashedly.
